I've also been known to get help from the state during my younger years.

so miker, when u worked for these companies, did u work some hours there and some hours elsewhere? how do companies hire you? i assume you don't get a huge amount of regular hours?

you could probably get regular hours in a facilities house or on the production office side. don't expect to get paid more than a few grand a year though, and that's if your lucky. in my day you were lucky to get 8000UKP per annum for those sorts of dogsbody jobs.

the key, in my case, was to write shitloads of letters. in fact, i have scanned in my rejection letters here.

and say "yes!" to every paid position you see available. It's temporary work, but there's a lot of it. It's just a matter of finding something you're happy doing & a way of getting there & back...
